Motorcycle License

MOTORCYCLE LICENSE

In the state of New Mexico, applying for a motorcycle license requires:

  • A motorcycle license test
  • A road test
  • The completion of a motorcycle safety course
  • A combination of the three

The type or types of tests you will need are determined by your age and the type of motorcycle you are planning on driving (see below)

MVD MOTORCYCLE LICENSE REQUIREMENTS AND RESTRICTIONS

There are three types of motorcycle licenses in New Mexico:

NEW CLASS M 13+ LICENSE

  • Required to be 13 years of age or older
  • Completion of Motorcycle Safety Course (Basic Rider Course) is required
  • Motorcycles must be under 100cc
  • Need a parent or guardian’s signature
  • Must wear a helmet
  • No passengers are allowed
  • License will have Y or Z endorsement ONLY

NEW CLASS M 15+ LICENSE

  • Required to be 15 years of age or older
  • Completion of Motorcycle Safety Course (Basic Rider Course) is required
  • Motorcycle license test is waived
  • Need a parent or guardian’s signature
  • Must wear a helmet
  • An instruction permit with a motorcycle endorsement may not carry a passenger while operating a motorcycle.
  • Will receive a license with W, Y, or Z endorsement (endorsement may be added to a Permit, Provisional or Driver’s License)

NEW CLASS M 18+ LICENSE

  • Required to be 18 years of age or older
  • Required to take a written motorcycle license test and a road test on a motorcycle the size of the sought endorsement (test waived with completion of Motorcycle Safety Course—Basic Rider Course)
  • Will receive a motorcycle license with W, Y or Z endorsement or W, Y or Z endorsement may be added to driver’s license based on size of motorcycle used to complete test

Please note that any proofs of residency must be original and not older than 90 days. Any documents for proof of residency over 90 days old will not be accepted.

Once you have completed the required course work, bring all proofs of completion to MVDNow along with:

  • Original State-Issued Birth Certificate or Certified Copy
  • Social Security card
  • proofs of residency (an Affidavit of Residency can be signed to prove teen residency. Form can be obtained at MVDNow)
  • A parent or guardian (if their signature is required)
  • Eyeglasses or contacts for the vision test (if you need them)
  • Proof of motorcycle license test or road test completion
