WHAT IS THE NEW MEXICO KNOWLEDGE EXAM?

Driving behind the wheel is one thing, but knowing the rules of the road is another. The New Mexico Knowledge Exam, also known as the “Written Exam” is a multiple-choice computerized test that is issued by the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. This exam is designed to assess driver’s license applicants on their knowledge of New Mexico driving laws and rules. Additionally, this exam will help you know how to react in certain situations that you may not come into contact with on a daily basis. This test is required for everyone who is applying for their:

Driving Permit
First-Time Driver’s License
Out-Of-Country Driver’s License Transfer
If your Driver’s License has expired for 5 years or longer

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE TAKING YOUR NEW MEXICO KNOWLEDGE EXAM

There are a few things to know before taking your New Mexico Knowledge Exam. You must pass this exam before you can apply for a New Mexico Driver’s License or Permit. This test is not required if you have a current out-of-state driver’s license. Anyone 15 1/2 years of age and older can take this exam. The knowledge exam is available in English, Spanish, Tagalog, Italian, German, French, Vietnamese, and Chinese.

Please give yourself up to 2 hours to complete the written test. If you wish to walk into our offices for the test, we recommend that you call ahead of time to ensure that the test station is available. The knowledge exam is 28 questions long. All class D (Driver) and M (Motorcycle) written test scores must be 70% or better to pass. Once you pass your Knowledge Exam, your passing score will be saved in the MVD system for 5 years. If you do not apply for your license during those 5 years, you will have to re-test.

What if you do not pass your exam on your first try? No need to worry! You are able to re-take the test that same day, or whenever you feel ready. If you fail the test a 2nd time, you will have to wait 1 full week before you can re-test. If you fail the test a 3rd time, you will have to wait 6 months from when you first tested before you can re-test.

KNOWLEDGE EXAM REQUIREMENTS

There are very few requirements for your Knowledge Exam. Here are the two:

Be 15 years and 6 months or older
Provide 1 proof of identity

Let’s go over the second requirement a little more. We recommend that you provide us with 1 proof of identity so we can create an MVD profile for you and save your test score in the MVD system. This will facilitate the process of looking up your test score when applying for your Driver’s License. Providing us with 1 proof of identity will help us input your First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, Date Of Birth, and/or Social Security Number correctly. You can use the same proof of identity that you plan on using when applying for your Driver’s License.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT MVD NOW

Here at MVD Now, we want to make your MVD visit as seamless as possible. Walk-ins are welcome, but we encourage you to schedule an appointment so you can guarantee zero wait time. There are two ways you can schedule an appointment. You can call us at 505-341-2MVD and we can schedule your appointment and also verify your documents over the phone. You also have the option of scheduling your own appointment through our online scheduler. If you schedule online, one of our MVD agents will call you to verify your documents before your appointment date. This will ensure that you bring all the necessary documents and prevents the dreaded “multiple trip” headache.

When you arrive at any of our offices, you will be greeted by a friendly MVD agent at the front door. They will help you check in for your appointment, verify your documents, and answer any questions that you may have. One of our other MVD agents will promptly assist you, collect payment, and set up your exam in our testing station. Once completed you are on your way! MVD Now also partners with local charities throughout the year. Currently, we are working with Make-A-Wish New Mexico. You have the option of rounding your MVD total to the nearest dollar or donating any other amount to this great foundation.
